Making the Most of College Visits

A campus visit is one of the most powerful tools in the college search — if you know how to prepare.

Before You Go
Research the college online before you go — academic programs, housing, campus culture
Register for an official campus tour and information session (they track demonstrated interest)
Prepare a list of questions tailored to your student's specific interests
Identify any professors, coaches, or program directors your student may want to meet
If you have time, schedule an alumni or on-campus interview
While You're There
Take notes and photos — campuses blur together after a few visits
Eat in the dining hall and walk around without the tour group
Talk to current students, not just admissions staff
Sit in on a class if the college allows drop-in visit
Notice the vibe: does your student feel energized or drained?

If you are unable to visit campuses in person, I highly recommend finding out about information sessions and tours online. Many colleges are even offering opportunities to interact with students and professors, as well as admissions representatives.
